Export as zip
Package an open document and all of its uploaded attachments into a single zip file in Downloads.
You can export any open document and its uploads and assets as a single .zip archive from the tray menu. The exported copy rewrites upload paths so the folder opens with all of its attachments on any computer.
Export an open document#
- Open the document in HTML Clay so it has an active session.
- Click the HTML Clay icon in your menu bar or system tray and open Export as Zip. (If no documents are open, the submenu shows No files open.)
- Click the document’s
~/...path in the submenu.
HTML Clay writes <stem>.zip into ~/Downloads and opens your ~/Downloads folder in Finder or your file manager. If HTML Clay cannot open the ~/Downloads window, it shows the notification Saved <name> in Downloads. instead.
Existing archives in ~/Downloads are never overwritten. If board.zip already exists, HTML Clay names the new archive board 2.zip, board 3.zip, and so on up to 999.
What is inside the zip#
Unzipping the archive produces a single top-level folder named after the document stem (with any assets- prefix stripped):
board/
board.htmlclay
assets-board/
...
uploads/
assets-board/

- The document: A copy of your
.htmlclayor.htmlfile with every/_/uploads/...reference rewritten to a relativeuploads/...path. Your original file on disk is only read and is not modified. - Sibling assets folder: The document’s own
assets-<name>folder from beside the document on disk, if one exists. - Referenced library uploads: Every file in
~/htmlclay/uploadsthat the document references, copied under<top>/uploads/<library-path>.
Hidden files (such as temporary files from an in-progress upload) and symlinks are left out of the archive. If a referenced upload is missing on disk, or if your computer has no ~/htmlclay/uploads folder yet, HTML Clay skips the missing file and still exports the document.
Troubleshooting exports#
That file is no longer open.: The document’s session closed after the tray menu was drawn. Open the document again and retry Export as Zip.Couldn't export <name>.: HTML Clay could not read the source file or write the archive into~/Downloads. Check that~/Downloadsexists and is writable.
